The Mental Game

Achieving Peak Athletic Performance the

Wholistic Way

This DVD revolutionizes the mental approach to sports and competition

by presenting a logical and rational approach to life and the process by
which change can occur in the individual.

Western psychology’s understanding of the way the mind works with
its emphasis on positive thinking and focus on the end as opposed to
the process fails to help players whose fear makes it impossible for
them to play to their full athletic potential.

It is only by dropping all sense of right and wrong and thereby exploring
fully and without judgment all the emotions that arise in us both on and
especially off the court and living these feelings fully that growth in the
individual can occur.

It is only by moving from the mind to the body while playing and
becoming more and more sensitive to the body and the 5 senses by
which we ‘feel’ the world can the individual be fully connected to this
present moment.

Mental training cannot be limited to just to the tennis court, it is
something that needs to be practiced 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
This training is simple and easy for anyone.

Relaxed Intensity

is a book that is about more than just tennis. It is equally penetrating
with its insights into life in general and the competitive experience in
particular.

The role of the mind during the competitive experience is explored in a

manner that is easy to understand and in a way that almost anyone can
relate to regardless of the level they play at, the sport they play or the
way they live their everyday life.

Instinctive Tennis

Is a comprehensive guide for players, parents and coaches with unusual
and intriguing insights into how each of these groups can be successful
in their respective roles.

For players, it is a guide for how to play the best tennis they are capable
of by exploring the mental, tactical, technical and fitness aspects of
the game. For coaches, it explores the language of the body and how
it learns. The body learns in a distinctively different way than the
mind. For parents, it has a full chapter on how they can best help their
children be the very best they can by detailing the role of the parent in
the making of a tennis player and champion.

Relaxed Intensity [Paperback]

This book is not just about tennis.  It is equally relevant in every activity one is involved in any aspect of life.  This book is focused on the mental side of the game and the role of the mind in peak athletic performance.  The individual plays the game of tennis and to teach or try and learn the game of tennis without addressing the person will be an exercise in futility.  And yet, this is what the main stream teaching industry is doing.Everyone agrees that the mental aspect of tennis is essential if we are to play to our full potential and yet when it comes to working on the mental side of the game, the ‘how’ is missing.

The first step in the ‘how’ is to increase awareness.  To bring some awareness to how the mind functions and how it fits into the individual as a whole.  To bring some awareness into the body as opposed to the mind.  The mind creates stories that are fictitious in nature, while the body is real.  The mind is a part of us, it is not all of us.  By focusing on the body we are brought into the reality of the present moment, while being in the mind will keep us away from the present.

This book provides some penetrating insights into the subtleties of the mind.  Right now, most of us value the mind, but not the body.  We have become so attached to the mind and the thoughts that come from it that we perceive it as the only reality.  It will be an eye opener to anyone who is looking to grow on a personal level.

The irony is that to understand the mind will not only allow us more enriched personal lives, but it will also help us improve our tennis.  It is possible to play good tennis without exploring ourselves and our inner experience, but then the experience will be hollow and without joy or love in one’s life.

When one realizes that to have success without peace of mind is of no value, only then will the information in this book be of some value.

Instinctive Tennis [Paperback]

Instinctive tennis is a comprehensive tennis manual for the player, coach and parent.  Too often the mental side of the competitive experience is only addressed when players reach the higher levels of competition.  I think this is a mistake.  Not only do the tennis professional, parent and player have a crucial role to play in developing a healthy mind-set towards competition, but this work must also start right from the beginning.

In the developing stage, players think all their problems arise from poor technique.  It is easy to blame technique because it gives us a sense of control.  If we can improve our technique we will never miss.  However, my feeling is that the vast majority of unforced errors are due to mental factors and not technique.  In this book we outline right from the beginning the role of the mind in achieving peak performance.

For coaches, we emphasize the natural learning capacity of the body through trial and error.  It is important to allow players to develop a greater sensitivity to their bodies by not giving them too much verbal instruction.  Consequently, a methodology is provided that shifts the rigid paradigm of teacher-student, to the more pliable facilitator-tennis lover.  The journey of moving from a teacher to a facilitator involves a fascinating adventure of personal exploration that cannot help but transform the traveler.

Parents also have a crucial role to play in helping their children become happy, well-adjusted and successful competitors.  Too often the focus for parents is on giving advice to their wards rather than focusing on themselves.

The most important role of a parent is to be centered, balanced and detached and yet supportive of and sensitive to the goals of their child.  The parent does not need to have all the answers, but honesty and respect towards their child will go a long way to ensuring a healthy relationship develops.  If there is a healthy and loving relationship between the parent and child all other ‘problems’ can be addressed and dealt with successful.

This book advises parents on their role as the leader of the team designed to support their child on all fronts.
